Processor
Intel Core i5 (12th gen+) or AMD Ryzen 5 (5000 series+)
Generation matters - an older i5 is not the same as a current one. Check the model number.
Memory (RAM)
16 GB minimum
8 GB can work for very light use but will feel slow the moment you have Teams, Chrome, and Office open at the same time. Check if it's upgradable - many modern laptops have it soldered in, so you need to buy right the first time.
Storage
512 GB SSD minimum - 1 TB recommended
Windows 11 + Office + normal business files will eat through 512 GB faster than you'd expect, especially with OneDrive sync. If you're buying something to last 3+ years, get 1 TB.
Display
1920×1080 (FHD) minimum
HD screens (1366×768) look noticeably worse and are harder on your eyes over a full workday. Don't accept anything lower than FHD for a business machine.
Operating System
Windows 11 Pro recommended
Pro gives you BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop, and domain join. Not always necessary for solo operators, but it's the right call for anything in a business environment. (Macs are a different story - macOS is solid for business as-is.)
Build quality
Higher spec = longer useful life
The laptops listed here are consumer-grade - solid but not the same as enterprise lines like Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, or ThinkPad Pro. No MIL-SPEC rating, no 3-year next-business-day warranty.
Running a business? I'd rather put you in a properly configured business-class refurb than a consumer laptop from Amazon. Better specs, longer legs, and I'll set it up right.
